Report of the VP of Community Service
There are two active programs for seniors and one planned:
(1) At the Greenfield Senior Community Center, OCA-Pgh started a much needed program for Chinese seniors. Over two years ago, we submitted a grant to the Area Agency on Aging for Allegheny County which was funded. Presently, this grant funds a Chinese-speaking staff member. It has expanded to include the following activities: Tai-chi, daily Majong, participation in the recent Senior Olympics, a course on English as a second language. and twice-a-week fitness program with trainer. OCA-Pgh continues to provided support working with the Center¡¦s director. Since the funding for these Senior Community Centers is funded by Allegheny County, only County residents can be a part of this program.
(2) For this reason, OCA-Pgh has initiated another senior program designed to serve all members of the greater Pittsburgh area and the tri-state area. The committee for this program is chaired by Frances Wong and includes John Chi and Dorothy Lee Green. Currently, senior program plans four events yearly. Two well-attended luncheons have already been held, one last year and one this year. The seniors have requested group trips and tickets to events. All are welcome, but only meals for seniors are subsidized by Chi family memorial fund. (Francis Wong mother recently passed away. The family requests any wishing to donate in her name can send to Phoenix Cheng, Treasurer [add address] a check payable to OCA-Pgh with a memo that it is a donation to the senior fund.
3) A new program called OCA Grands is being developed with the Three River Families with Children from China (TRFCC) so the Chinese community can act as an extended family for these adopted Chinese children to share our heritage. This is an opportunity for all ages to supply a complete family support. A joint picnic with TRFCC is planned for June 10. Plan to attend!
More programs are being planned for our younger families.
